                                                               Song Of Despair Part- 1
                                                                    (Iqbal’s Shikwa)

Why should I sustain losses, and remain unmindful of my interest?
Why should I not care for the future, why should I rue the past?

I am hearing the wails of nightingale and I am all ears,
Companions!I must not remain silent like the flowers,

Potential of eloquence encourages to narrate the episode,
Dust be into my mouth! If I ever complain to God.

True! We are known for the sense of obedience,
We narrate the painful story of our helplessness,

Our lives are at standstill, our hearts replete with complaints,
If we wail, we are helpless, we can’t observe restraint,

O God! Please hear the grievance of Thy faithful men,
The unpleasant utterances from the lips that sing Thy hymn.

(“Dust be into my mouth” means I may be humiliated.)
